get some scrap plywood to screw over existing hole on the bottom so u can use a holesaw and pre cut your carpet with a utility knife so u dont pull a thread and get a runner http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif

drill a hole in the size you need in a scrap piece of 3/4" plywood, and then you can clamp that piece to the lid so the drill bit will not wander while drilling out a bigger hole.
also might want to clamp a sacrafical piece of ply under the lid while drilling to reduce tear out
