steering cable replacement
I have an 89 cajun 185 fishin machine, with a 150 merc on the back. The steering cables are locked up. I have tried to lube them and i still get nothing. Who makes replacement cables, i know the original was detroit marine i believe. It is a dual cable rack system. Thanks guys

Teleflex is a HUGE supplier of marine steering systems. Check them out. You should be able to find a replacements system from them that will work.
Take a look at the helm unit under the dash to see whe information you can get off of it. I have called Teleflex, they seem to be quite knowledgable.

I have a complete system in the classifieds if you want to check it out.
Re: steering cable replacement (judd.mcclure)
Same thing happened to me about a month or so ago. I kept trying to turn the wheel until the cable snapped! TELEFLEX makes the system you need. The basic set-up goes for about $170(Cabelas, BassPro, Overtons etc..), but I got mine for $99 from a place called SEA-WAY in Seattle. Was worth the wait & shipping to save that much $$. I was a bit intimidated to try to install myself, so I had my boat mechanic handle it and all is fine now. Nice and SMOOTH turning!
GOOD LUCK!
Re: steering cable replacement (judd.mcclure)
You already have some great replies, the price I found for Teleflex from Bass Pro Shop was $170,
sounds familiar huh. So I go to O'Reilly's and get a can of spray penetrant, loosened nut holding
cable to the motor, sprayed on both sides of motor, started moving the motor back and forth and
I had it freed before I left the O'Reilly's parking lot, approximately 10 minutes, hope it does not
sound like Ripley's believe it or not, is the hønest truth. Was told I would have to replace it anyway
by parts man at Bass Pro Shop. It works so freely I do not believe it, that was two months ago.
Best of luck with yours.

If you need a complete dual cable system I have one I took off a 186 champion that is only six months old. Comes complete with new helm and everything.

Detroit Marine (Detmar) is no longer in business and cables to fit it are nowhere to be found. I searched the world over (LOL) and came up empty. I just changed my whole system out. I went with the pre-teck dual rack system complete with new helm and cables from iboats for $186 because the original detmar system wasn't a no feed back system so i figured i'd go the cheap route and roll the dice. The system works great. You will have to increase the hole size a little regardless of which system you go with. It wasn't a bad job at all.
PS, I think the teleflex systems listed above for &170 are single cable systems.
Re: steering cable replacement (lakefolk)
I just replaced my duel cable system on a Ranger 330 V4 140.
I had a duel rack under the dash and duel cables, and I replaced them with a new NFB Telflex system and the best part is the new style rack and cable is a single rack with 2 cables and the NFB helm is better also saves room under the dash. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif
