Buffing help

Ok Experts.. Time to share your knowledge, I attempted to wax the Ranger but I'm not getting the results that I am looking for..... I am using Fiberglass restorer compound fm wally world and that did a good job and now at least the Top Cap is smooth again. It did take the oxidation off and I dont believe I need to wet sand, Next I used Maguires Flagship Marine wax and it did a ok job but not what I expected... I have a Varible speed buffer from Harbor Frieght..... Maybe I put the wax on wrong or didnt buff it at the right speed I DONT KNOW... I usually apply the wax by hand then use the buffer on low speed to remove. Make sure your using a bonnet made for removing the wax. Don't use the same type you used to compound the boat it will just take most of the wax off.

Get some 3M Finesse It II Finishing Material. Use it with a HIGH SPEED buffer. Following that, wax the boat. The junk from wally world is to coarse and while it will remove oxidation, it will not leave a fine finish.(does more damage than good). The finish has to many scratches to shine properly.

Get 3M Perfect II Rubbing Compound #5973. See my post. Get a GOOD compounding pad. Compound it then wax it. I found the glaze to be unnecessary. I think if more people used this product there would be less wet sanding needed by everyone. Use the III setting on the bufffer. Spread it w/ your hand on the boat then use buffer w/ GOOD pad.

I just did a fender on my Basscat trailer that was oxidized pretty bad and did it by hand I used 3M restorer and wax and it took about 20 min.turned out awesome also buffed with a coat of wax by hand when done.

When applying the 3M Finesse It II. How do you apply, and which bonnet/pad do you use. Please explain in detail. Also what setting on the buffer? Does this give a really shiney finish. My top deck looks like it has a haze...I had it buffed by a car detail shop, but did not change it much.

The last four weekends I've been working on my 482VS Ranger. Finally finnished it tonight but forgot to bring the camera. Boat is 65 miles away. Anyway I wet sanded with 2000 and a block. Then used the HF variable buffer with 3M compound and a sponge pad. Then used final glaze with a sponge pad. Lastly I used Colinate Fleetwax to go over the finish. Tonight I did a second coat of Fleetwax. Some scratches have "flashed" the glitter on the sides and against a dark blue background, it's obviouse. Couldn't buff that out http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/roll.gif That's an old body man's line "It'll buff out" no matter how bad it is.

It's hard work. I worked on 3ft sections and basically did a quarter of the boat each weekend (sat & sun) The old boat has been fished hard, but I will give you guys a big THANK YOU for all this great information. The boat looks a whole lot better then it did. Just waxing wasn't getting it. I would still like to slide the boat back a few feet on the trailer to get at a few areas I can't get around because of the wheel-wells and side boards.

Next week I'll be redoing the bunks. Have to replace the boards. Can't find stainless steel staples around here. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/praying.gif
