Questions ABout Wet Sanding a Black Hull
I have a 96 Gambler with a black hull that I want to wet sand. I've read about guys wet sanding a white hull, but never a black hull. Anyone out there wet a hull other than white? Also, when you wet sand are you using a sanding block or just the sheets alone?
Thanks

Use a block,Black is no different than any other color... only thing with black is you can see the sanding scatches that you don't get buffed out http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eek.gif you may want to take black up to 1500 grit to make it easier on yourself..

Thanks...So what grits would you recommend for the process? Should two guys be able to knock it out in one day? Also, I am assuming if you start with lets say 320 or 400 grit, you sand the entire boat before moving to the next grit, versus doing a section at a time. Should you keep a constant water spray on the boat while sanding? Any idea on how many sheets of each grit I will need for a 21 footer? I know it will come out looking great, but there is definitely a fear factor here for me http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/doh.gif
Thanks
Re: Questions ABout Wet Sanding a Black Hull (Fat Basser)
I started wet sanding mine today! I have a Black Ranger w/ red flake in it.
The oxidation had gotten pretty bad in the last year. I started with 600grit in the really bad areas. I steped it up with 800, 1000, 1500, and finished with 2000.
I was really worried about taking too much off using the 600, so I started with a 3 ft area. I spent alot of time with the 1500, and 2000 grit paper. I just dipped the paper in water, but I kept the hose close by to rinse the residue off the boat with.
I hand buffed with finesse-it. My polisher hasn't arrived yet. The shine and results were WAY better than I hoped for!!!
Now I just need to figure out how to repair some stress cracks. They really stand out now...

Finesse-it is made by 3M. I used it after sanding with the 200grit paper. The boat really shined up!! I hand waxed with Megulars flagship after buffing.
I don't know if finesse-it will remove scratches or not. I sanded mine out as best I could.
There are plenty of experts here that should be able to answer that question.
