I have a 2009 Ranger 188 VX with a Mercury 175 Pro XS and 24P Tempest Plus
My question is should i go with a 6" or 8" hydraulic jack plate? What will the xtra 2" do for me?
My reason for the jack plate is more for shallow water running then speed.
With no jackplate i run at low 60's, had 61.4 on gps.
Also what brand? should i look at

Jeff, Ranger said to put the 8" on, the biggest without warranty problem's. The price difference isn't worth worrying about. I've run 65mph gps with a 23 before I put it up for the winter, ran out of rpm's. Have a B&B 24p I'll run it the spring, hope to get 67mph. Bob's, T&H, Slide master, are all good. As before, just have your dealer install it, and wait till spring to set up and run it..
If your reason is for shallow running the 6" would be all you would need.
Put the 8" on. It will increase resell value, and when you start looking for added speed thats one place that will be resolved.
Put on the 8" as this puts the prop back and the 2" extra will give you alot more lift and speed, which is what all us ranger quys are looking for. I have a Z20 that I can get 72 out of in the winter months with the 10" jackplate.
Greetings.......I have a 188 VX with an 8" an I run a 24 tempest +..........I wasn't satisfied at all till I sent my prop to Mark Croxton. Now It planes off much quicker with less throttle has more lift an about 2 more miles per hour top end. These boats no matter what you do are not racers. They are made for durability with top of the line componets. They will take rough water extremely well if you do not over-trim but the most desireable trait is the stability an room of both fishing platforms. with no jack plate , i have had 61.4 on gps, one person, full gear load and about 1/2 tank of gas
How many rpms are you turning the 24" prop now. Wot rpms should be 5900 to 6000 rpms

Greetings............On the top of your motor bracket is an aluminum spec list of your motor. It tells you the born date of your motor max rpm an other features. Some 175 pro xs motors the max rpm is 5750 an some are 6000. My particular motor is a 5750. You need to read this an try to stay in that range........ That being said you need to pay attention to water pressure an temp gauges as well as rpm, a slight glance every once an awhile will do. ................Redworm.............
I do have the mercury smart gauge built into the dash, it is a digital gauge, this should save me from having to purchase other gauges, i will have to buy a trim gauge, i don't think they come with jack plates.
I will look at the tag next time i get to the boat, the boat is in the garge, we have some snow here now,

Did Mark add tip cup to your 24? I run a 25 on mine. It does well with it. Tku, and merry Xmas

No, the 24 is the best all around performer. The 25 only turns a little over 5500 r's at wot. I gained a couple mph with the 25 that was b/b by Mark, and, a lite to medium load. Merry Xmas

I was told the 23M was the best prop for my 188 with Yammie 175 (?)
We were comparing the 24 and 25. The 24 is definately true on my Opti. with jp set at 3 bp. Not aquainted the Yammie. Just my .02. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif Thanks
