I work for an environmental consulting company and occasionally have the opportunity to go out and collect water samples and rent my boat out to the company. It is not a large amount of money, but is not a bad deal (or a bad way to spend a day at work). The thing is, I will be treated as a subcontractor in terms of the boat rental (I would assume). While it is a sweet deal, my understanding is that, with my boat policy, if using the boat for work I am completely on my own if something happens. It is definitely not worth losing my house in a liability situation, or even having the boat not covered.
Is there a policy type or rider that someone can offer that would allow me to do this for a reasonable cost. We are talking an average of 4-5 events per year, generating about $1,000 in income. This year, however, I have the opportunity for up to 20 events. As you can see, this does not seem to be worth any type of commercial policy, but worth looking into something.
If someone has a way to cover this, I would definitely consider switching. The places I do this work are most of the same places I fish, so the activity/exposure is essentially the same as recreational use.
