First time replacing the waterpump
I have a Johnson 120 (J120TLASB) that I am going to replace the waterpump kit (p/n 5001594). The instructions say to use adhesive 847 in some of the o-ring grooves and gasket sealing compound on the impeller cup and the impeller plate gasket. I have neither of these and the dealer did not say anything about these when I bought the kit. So are these sealers needed?

yes, to hold the o-ring in the cap, and gasket.

Gasket adhesive from a auto parts place is fine. Get a small jar with the brush in it. Make sure you don't get any adhesive near the center of the housing as that can lead to loss of prime. Just coat the outside edge of the impeller housing. Insert the O ring and then impeller cup. Dab a few places on the D ring groves just to keep the D ring in place. Let the D ring lay on a flat surface for a bit to let it regain shape and then install it. Use some adhesive on the gasket for the plate to seal it.
