Hi,
I'm trying to install a new impeller on my motor and have run into problems. Have taken the 6 bolts (2 on each side of lower unit, 2 in the back) and can't get the lower unit to drop down more than an inch or so. Seems like it's hung on something. I figured it might be the shift linkage, but there's really no easy way to disconnect it at the top. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the BBC.
If you look under the carbs from the left side (from behind) you can just barley see the bolt that will disconnect the shift rod, its not easy to get to and I would put at least one bolt back in the gearcase tighten it up and shift the motor into reverse, you may have to spin the prop by hand to get it to go into gear.

You will do a lot of cussing when either loosing or tighten that, *&^%(#$, shift rod bolt . . . unless Rusty and the gang around here can give us novices their secret on how to get to that bolt. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/bows.gif
Okay....I've started the long process of getting the little !@#!@#$ bolt out...lol. I'm trying to attach a couple of pics just so I make sure it's the "right" one. I took the linkage on the side of the motor off to allow a tad of access. Working with a 7/16 wrench I think I've accomplished about 3-5 full rotations in about an hour...lol. I dread getting this thing back in.

Nope Nope Nope the screw is on the left side of the motor, Best thing to do is remove the VRO pump and you will be able to see it better! Shift the motor to reverse pull the screw pin out 7/16" in if you have a couple of universal joint for the sockets it helps alot. CM http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/pimp2.gif
I found the "right" one now...unfortunately...I have the other off. I think I'll just yank the carbs and have a clear shot into the bottom. Thanks for the inputs.
If you're gonna yank things off how about just removing the lower cowling cover then you'll have unlimited access. I always use a longer extension and universal socket adapter to get at it. To remove and reinsert I use one of those flexible tool picker upper with the 'jaws' on the end and spring loaded. Once back in the hole I can usually get in threaded with the socket. Occassionally, it'll take a little cussin' to get it started though. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
Alrighty....got the carbs pulled off to one side and can easily see where I went wrong. Have things back together as they should be now in the linkage. Will go after the little varmint-screw. I'll be back in a few hopefully to tell a successful story...lol

Great! now the fun part begins when you re-install the LU take a wire coat hanger and cut it at about 14", put a hook in one end and about a 30* bend in the middle. When the shift rod comes up out of the LU use the coat hanger to line up the hole through the linkage, that is where the hook comes into play, a long screw driver also helps to hold it in place. Next go to the port side and if you have one a screw starter helps out alot, to get it started then I use a Snapon T-62A flex driver to finish up it is a 1/4" drive spring type driver.
Hope you didn't bend the lower carb linkage when you pulled the carbs, easy to do. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eek.gif

Great news! Lower unit is back on the boat and everything seems to be working well. Motor hasn't been ran in a really long time...but I managed to get it running after a little TLC. Hopefully things will go well at the lake tomorrow afternoon. Thanks again for everyone's help. Boat
