Re: Modulus vs "tons" (Bass Pro Shopper)
idk ive wondered the same thing but ive always thought whats the consumer gonna buy? if i was a regular joe id think 30 tons would be awesome to have for a fishin rod and wouldnt know what modulus is http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif
Re: Modulus vs "tons" (eightpounder)
: Ton rating is the overal modulus of the graphite fiber. Basically just another label, marketing idea. I think ton ratings are what the manufacturers have went by for a long time. The IM ratings are for consumers, so they understand ratings easier.
Higher the ton or modulus, the denser the material. More sensitivity in higher ratings. Also easier to break rods in higher ratings.
IM-6 graphite = 30+ ton material (Standard Modulus)
IM-7 graphite = 35+ ton material (Intermediate Modulus)
IM-8 graphite = 40+ ton material (Inter-high Modulus)
IM-10 graphite = 54+ ton material (High Modulus) ----
Re: Modulus vs "tons" (xranger77)
I believe Xranger77 is correct. Also, one manufacturers 50 million modulus material isnt the same as another manufacturers. Things such as scrim (carbon, fiberglass), filler material, external coating, can effect performance from one brand of rod to another, not to mention the difference in guides, guide placement and handle material. A high quality 33 million modulus blank may be as or more sensitive and overall perform better than a low quality 50 million modulus blank. Hopefully the rod builders chime in on all of this.

just another way for them to give you less, and you thinking you are getting more and getting charged for it.

Re: Modulus vs "tons" (Bass Pro Shopper)
As the Packers fan put it...all depends on materials.
Dont want to point fingers..but there are a few companies that makes inconsistant rods. Easiest way for that is not lining the spline properly on the rod. That alone will change the action and feel of a rod.
Using subpar material and labeling it as something the consumers sees as "good" is another way.
