I am looking to buy a small paint booth soon to paint crankbaits. Does anyone know if I would need to buy a respirator to wear if I had a booth? I will be painting in the garage and wasn't sure if I would need one.

You can do what you want but I will give you my 2 cents. I am no pro and some of these guys may make fun of my setup but it was cheap and works great for me.
The respirator probably wont be necessary unless you are using auto paint.
Here is a shot of my "paint booth". It is a range hood built on top of a plywood box. The box was painted white to help keep it light. I then bought a lazy susan at walmart and mounted my vise to it. The light on the range hood works good also.

you would really laugh at mine. its a cardboard box with no fan, and about 4 different lights aimed at it.

I myself don't use a booth (to confining for me). I have venting for the entire room where I paint and spray directly into the exhaust filters. I get very little over spray in the air or at least I thought that was the case. I also use almost all water based paints and a couple of years back I developed breathing problems. Long story short it was the micro particles in the air that was the cause.
My doctor suggested wearing a respirator while in the paint room at all times. I starting wearing it and my breathing went back to normal.
What I'm getting at is don't take chances with your health. Non toxic paint doesn't mean its safe. It can still cause problems.
Thats because a whole room vent dont work... These booths work great if you have a strong enough fan. I have a similar set up, but mine is vented out the window.
I can imagine that even using water based paints could have a negative effect on your health if exposed to it for extended time periods. I will probably use a respirator with the booth, open the garage door and run the exhaust from the booth outside.
My main concern is that we (my family) are in and out of the garage all the time. I want to make sure that there are not any mini particulates floating in the air, both when I paint and when I dont, all the time that may negatively effect my family's health. Will a booth take care of that?
