I obviously am doing something wrong when I paint baits that are already painted. No matter if I cuff them up a bit or just spray over it is hell getting them fully covered with white so that I ca begin painting the desired pattern. I have made a point to try and buy lighter color baits when I want to paint them but still I feel like I am having issues. I use Createx usually and bought a spray can white primer but still having trouble. any thoughts?
i hear ya!!! ive gone to a white primer,it seems theres more pigment in it,and it dries faster it seems.
White primer will solve your problem.

Try to get your hands on some Auto Air Sealer White. It's made by Createx so if you are ordering online they should have it. It takes a few layers to get total coverage so make sure you heat set each layer. I usually wait about 15 minutes after I have the bait covered before I start adding extra colors.

Mark is the issue you can see the org. colors thru the white or is it the paint pulling away in certain areas?

Old colors bleed through to the point I feel like I am having to put too much paint on the repaints. I do not want to change their bouyancy or action by over painting if I can help it.
Is it happening on all your baits or just certain brands? I know on some of the older baits that I believe have an enamel pain,t can be really tough to completely cover.
Seriously, I don't know why folks waste so much time and money on a plain jane white base coat. Go to Wally world pick up a big bottle of white paint in the craft section. Thin it a little with water and dip your baits. Hang them to dry and your good to go. Trust me dude this will work and you can dip 20 baits in less time than it would take to spray a single bait with an AB. If it doesn't cover the old lure in one dip then dip it again. It will not affect the action of the bait a single bit. There is a lot of misinformation about the steps necessary. We are painting fishing lures not restoring a 69 Mustang.
I use painter's choice white primer and it has never failed to cover old paint. May need two coats sometime but not very often. I used to dip baits in white latex (thinned) but that has several draw backs as well.
I too have had red bleed thru the base coat and also if someone has used a sharpie to color the bait. The only way I have found around it is to not rough up the bait too much as to get into the old paint. That only applies to the red baits. Strike King seems to be the strongest red out there. I tried primer, fusion spray, krylon, etc. It still bled. Even tried the black base coat, no luck.
Now that's something I'm gonna try for sure. I imagine it would work on new blanks as well. I hate base coating and usually do 10-20 lures at a time. Thanks for the tip Gunnie.

I respect your point of view but I also have mine. No matter that I just paint for fun and personal use the fact is I ain't gonna do nothing half arse. i want to do the best job i can on my baits. If it takes me a bit longer to do them I am Ok with that. i have fun painting and building anyway. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
Mark, lots of guys that paint baits professionally dip the baits...dip in primer, dip in basecoat color, air brush accent colors, dip in clear.
Suit yourself, but I assure you this is a solid time saver.
