I know i have been talking with a rod builder here about building a flipping stick with micro guide but he has done some testing along with a few other guys he knows and they have been having problems with the guides pulling lose since there is so little foot to wrap with and the are under such great stress on hook sets. He is know building a trap rod with the micro guides and its going to be sweet !
Wrapped the right way and taken care of right the guides will never come out. There's been a few instances with wind knots using braid but very few. I've had 1 out of about 25 rods that guides came out on it but after asking some questions it turns out it was braid and wind knots. There's an awful lot of builders out there that have been using Micro's for a long time and you won't hear anything like this from them. Like I said wrapped with a locking wrap and educate the user on the proper care of a rod and there will be VERY low instance of problems or at least no more than you would see with "normal" sized guides.
Why are the threads so long for the reel seat where your fingers will be at? Also are you going to turn the cork down any to match with the back of the reel seat so there is no raised part?

I love the "Dobyns" link when you're talking about getting a custom. That rocks.
dpage is right... built correctly, there's no worries. There are some nuances to using the micros that I personally think plays into things a bit more than with other guides. Folks just slapping micros on and rolling may well have some issues as a result.
I've had one set of micros ripped through the wraps... literally ripped. That was a deliberate user error.
I never said the trap rod was for me just said he was building it and was going to be sweet! Will i use it i am sure i will for the purpose of giving him some feedback on it. I have used one of his before with micro's to give feedback on and to help on some other rod design and that rod weighed 2.74 ozs when said and done.This builder is one of the top known in the country hands down!
But as you guys stated i am sure there is always someone that can break something that is suppose to be unbreakable!

Just a curious question, only using 10 micro's on a 7'11" rod I'm assuming you're spiral wrapping it right? Just seams like several to few for the guides to be on top.
David its not going to be spiral wrapped and is a collapsible rod, and will be used for more things than just flipping, CR, Traps, Deep Crank Baits, etc.
But ask away sense you are the one who built me my other micro guide rod, which I use for about anything including flipping and LOVE IT. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif
Here's my 2 cents.
I use micro guides whenever I can and have had zero issues and yes, I do use a locking wrap.
The rod above looks good, but that wouldn't be my first choice in positioning the hook keeper. Then again, on my personal rods, the corss bar on my Fuegos serve as the hook keeper.
Couple things. First, the micro's do not have an inherent problem with pulling loose from wraps. They do have a problem with builders that have not actually spent the time testing and developing them...just piggybacking off of those of us that have. Number wise 10 seems OK, might be to many...hard to tell without the blank on hand. Ignore that chart from Mudhole....13 guides is about 5 to many for most rods regardless of guide size. As far as a forhan wrap goes....I have used it, but I don't think it makes a difference...you can still pull a guide loose from it just as easily if you don't use it. Wrapping with proper tension and good wraps makes more of a diff.

I would look to an issue with the wraps. Unless you set a hook into a stump with 80lb. braid you shouldnt be pulling guides. The other culprit can be wind knots with braid.

Question... was the testing done side by side with macro and micro guides wrapped at the same tension with the same repeatable test method? If not, you're going to have flawed results.
Think about this... the micro guide is a smaller lever than a size 6 guide. Maybe it doesn't need as much foot to be wrapped because it doesn't generate as much torque...

I agree, these are high quality rods and require high quality care. I have been installing #5.5 for years and out of all my customers i had one guy that had issues with guides popping or pulling out. After some research and finally fishing a tournament with him i figured it out. When he pulled his rods out of the rod locker you could hear each guide popping out of the rod tube, and i think i had to replace guides on my rods that day from him stepping on them. Needless to say he don't fish with my rods anymore and i am still repairing the ones he sold to someone else. My best freind has several of my rods that are three years old with the same guides installed the same way and they are still in verry good condition and i think he has popped one guide out and it was b/c his dog got hooked on the rod or something in that manner. I am not saying you have to baby these rods while fishing, but if you step on them and rub them on rod tubes you are going to have an issue. I agree with Scott that there should not be an issue with the micros coming loose. I used to grind the feet down a bunch on guides, as small as the feet on micros, to allow for smaller wraps, and never had a guide come loose. If you want micros, guides coming loose should not be a worry if the rod builder installs them properly. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
