What do you guys use to line your guides up?
Some folks use bright colored fly line or equal. You can also mount the reel and run line to tip. Center the line on the reel and the tip and eyeball line as passes through each guide. Should be centered. Me, I just hold the butt against my chest with the guides on the back side of the rod. I use the rod as a sight line and look to see that each guide shows equal amount on each side of the blank. Your eyeball will get them very, very straight. I do this on initial placement and wrap with tension set so I can re-adjust the alignment with same method prior to applying finish.
I put a reel on and get the first one set after wrapping it. Then I eyball the rest as I go. When I'm done wrapping I site down the blank with the guides on the bottom.

on spinning rods, I put the reel on then mount the tip, eyeball to get it lined up right ( i use the trigger to line up a casting rod). Wrap all the guides and then the and line up the butt guide with the reel or trigger. From there, i do what the others have said, aim the rod like a gun and sight eyes down, its pretty easy to tell if one of them is out of alignment.... i will say this - do it during the day in sunlight or have a well lit room, especially if you're using small guides on a big blank.
