help me out guys i want to build my first rod, and i want it for a swimbait/c-rig rod
please tell me where to get my supplies, the rod blank for this action,guides, i want a split grip handle too.... I gues just tell me where to go to get everything !!!!
first, I would decide what kind of rod you want.
To me, a SWB and C rig blanks would not be interchangable
I would want a 7.5-8' h/xh mod fast blank for swimbaits or a 6'8"-7'2" MH fast for c rig. That is just my opinion. Next, you need to decide if it is spinning or casting
Next is price range-how much do you want to spend (you do not save money building your own rods) After you have these areas covered, buy a book on rodbuilding (~$15) and watch some you tube videos.
Many places have complete kits.
I would start with Swampland first (http://www.swamplandtackle.com/)
Lance can get you the blank based on what you need, reel seat, and split grips.
The Castaway Blank BB2 Big Show XP3 may make a good swb blank and it is only $35. Find out from Lance what size top fits the blank. He may have the guides also, so ask. Heck he may have everything you need... :)
Most likely, you'll need thread, guides, tip top, resin (glue for grips and seat), and epoxy from another source
These can be found at Cabelas (online and sometimes in stores), Mudhole, Janns Netcraft. These places also have complete kits (everything listed above), but often the choices are limited ( the action, length, and power) and may not have exactly what you want.
You will also need a wrapping set up. This can be a manufactured one, or a cardboard box cut with V's. You can hand turn for drying, or buy a drying motor kit
Other materials include reamers to fit the grips, possibly sandpaper (150-200-400), masking tape, and a measuring tape. Good luck
Lance will probably have a 7' HG40 MB784 on hand for reasonable money as well. This one feels like a decent CR blank to me. May be a little quicked tipped for some. I 2nd the BB2 for up to medium size SB. Custom Tackle Supply is another very good supplier that will help out over the phone with selections. All are Good Folks and work with beginners. Lots of info available for starting out with a little time spent surfing/reading. Tons of books and videos available by practicing crafters as well. Best way to find the blank you want is visit a supplier and pull on some till you find the one that satifies you and fits your preference as to how a certain rod should feel for a given application. That's why I build my own.

unless you are throwing 1/2-3/4oz swimbaits, i don't think you'll build a rod that can do both nicely.
Lance carries mostly batson guides, if you go that route, i would go with a spiral wrap and micros - Lance has everything you need in that regard (i know cuz i just bought a bunch).
Bob at custom tackle is a great resource as well for other blanks. Both guys are awesome to deal with and will go the long mile to explain the proper setup and answer any questions.

Micros are great, but the application of those guides will accentuate any deficiencies and flaws in one's technique. If one is willing to struggle through it, then the performance of the rod is enhanced. Might be too problematic for someone brand new to the art. just my 2C
my swimbaits are the soft style ( basstrix, bassmagics ) up to the 6 or so inches.... thats why i though i coudl get away with a rod pulling double duty!!!

I agree 100%, BassCatFisher. You should be able to get a double duty rod. I think these guys are speaking of BIG swimbaits well over an ounce. I've thrown the 5 1/2" Shadalicious on a 1/4th oz weighted hook on a 7' MH Fast rod with no problems. I'd look for a c-rig rod that should be able to double up for the soft swimbaits you plan to use. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
