help with clear coating

I hate to see these Rick Clunn baits get all chipped up, I like several of the factory paint jobs but they just chip too easily and that is why I would like to put a 'thin' protective 'clear' coat on.

I am wondering what options everyone has been using to clear coat their crankbaits. I have tried the 2 ton and well it just seems to be too thick and I am just not getting the results I was hoping for.

For those of you using the 2 ton are you thinning it at all and if so how? Or perhaps my cheap paint brush approach is the wrong way to go or I am putting on too much.

Is anyone using an automotive clear coat that requires a hardner? If so are you spraying it and do you use an air brush or a regular spray gun?

Has anyone tried these 'clear' polyurethanes in a spray can? Will it hold up to the water?

JMHO, (and what I do on new cranks) you don't want a thick clear or you take a good chance of altering the weight/balance of the lure. I use Enviro-Tex Lite ( available at many craft stores, get mine at Hobby Lobby) thinned w/methanol about 25% by volume. I thin my D2T with a few drops of acatone...Several lite coats are better then one heavy coat...
