2nd pitch after setting hook?
If I set the hook on a fish or just set the hook and miss a fish, my second pitch is always wasted because my line (20lb mono) is always buried up just enough to prevent another accurate pitch. Is there anything I can do to prevent this wasted 2nd pitch after setting the hook? Anyone else have this problem?

I have never had this problem with mono or flourocarbon but it is one reason I hate using braid. I still haven't found a way to prevent it 100% but using a large diameter line for backing seems to help with braid, this probably isn't going to help your problem though.

Is it possible the line is too loose the spool, try putting a little tension on the line as you reel in.

That's a really good possibility. Thanks for the advice.

I only fill the spool 1/3 to 1/2 with 50lb braid and haven't had any problems yet. you could also try the tape on the line trick.

It is because the line is large diameter whcih causes gaps and it gets loose from pitching and reeling the line slowly without tension. When you set the hook, the tension pulls the line down in between those gaps. The will pretty much always be an issue with large mono/flouro unless you can find a way to reel the line tighter, while pitching. I have the same issue and its usually after setting the hook and landing a fish...then going to make the next pitch. If you are pitching very short distances (every time), you could make your average pitch, put a strip of tape over the line/spool, then reel it in...you will then be playing with a limited amount of line and the tape should keep the line from digging in...this iwll also keep the deeper part of the line on the spool from loosening up or backlashing.

the tape on the line trick works great when I use braid. Just make a cast and peel a bit more line off and then put electrical tape or something else and then reel in. I never have the line bury anymore.

I usually put my thumb on the spool when I set the hook.... I do not do it on purpose, it is just a reflex action but maybe this is why I do not have this issue. I use 20lb P-line Braid.

+ 1 http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif the tape trick works for braid and mono been using it for years
