Hi guys
We have been wacking them pretty good on my local lake on main lake points 10-25 feet on jerk baits. When the fish move up into shallow water will they still bite a jerkbait. Does anybody have luck throwing a shallow jerkbait in less than 6-7 foot of water?
One of my favorite baits for prespawn fish till they hit the beds is a jerkbait. When they're up shallow like that, it generally helps to have wind. But yes, a jerkbait is deadly in shallow water. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Rapala original floater is a long forgotten fish catcher.
I like a floater in shallow water they don't run near as deep. Some guys think shallow floating jerkbaits and go with an original rapala but its more of a finesse bait. I like largers jerkbaits you can keep moving and get a good underwater darting action. The Limited edition floating swimthwick is good KVD won a classic on it. I also use a Vision 110 hi-float in shallow water but be careful the bills break off. Smaller suspending jerkbaits work well in shallow water as well such as the Xcalibur twitch bait.
Most standard jerkbait are fishable in 7-8 feet of water...Megabass 110, etc. He catch a ton of our winter fish at these depths and shallower. The best "shallower than standard" jerbait that I have used is the Lucky Craft Slender Pointer, either 97 or 112.
The Pointer 78 is a fish catcher but after years of experience on our lakes, the upper limit of fish (largemouth that is) that will eat that biat is usually upper 3s to maybe 4 pounds. Have we caught a TINY handful bigger than this--yes...but on a day-to-day basis, it is rare.

I throw a small husky jerk runs a lot like an original rapala but suspends well.

+ 1 on the pointers. Use them all the time the whole month of Late March and all April. 78's are good and so are the 115's (I think thats the #) a little larger, catch everything from 8" fish to 5 pounders. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
Had my best jerk bait bite of my life last year in early spring. The fish were very shallow in a pre spawn mode. I used a chart/shad pointer 100 and a fluke when there was some wood and stick ups. My seven year old and I wacked em. It was a mid day bite. Probably got better as the water warmed.
