Suspending Rogue question.
I bought two new rogues today and neither of them stay suspended. Are they suppose to stay at the depth you crank them down too or should they float back up. If they are suppose to stay down what does a guy have to do to get them to stay down. Bass right now are sluggish with 44 degree water and I was told that suspended Rogues are the ticket if you can leave them sit long enough.
Any other suggestions?
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (pastormark)
They are the ticket right now. The secret is getting it down as soon and deep as possible. Then a good jerk and letting it sit for a good 5-6 seconds. They are supposed to float. I just caught a 4 pounder on one last week in the pond by my house. Ice still on the pond... hope this helps.

Thanks. I was told they should stay at a certain depth and just stay there but, mine always floated up. Thanks again.
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (pastormark)
Every once in a while, you will get one that truly suspends, but most of them float slowly. There are ways to change it, but I wouldn't mess with it.
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (pastormark)
Smithwick makes both floating and suspending Rogues----each model should do just that. i think the floaters have yellow eyes.
Perhaps you bought the floating models rather than the suspenders??
If your baits float up, you can test them with SuspendDots until they are neutrally bouyant, or you can buy suspending models that will suspend and 'roll' in place.
go to smithwick lure co.'s website. good luck.
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (BassOrBlast)
you are right on with the eyes thing. But the suspenders usually float at a way slower pace than the floaters. I have experimented many a times with both.
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (pastormark)
You usually have to add some suspend dots or my preferred method is lead wire on the hook shanks to get them to suspend perfectly, a lot of it depends on water temp.
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (20_lb_sack)
Water temp. makes a difference. You could also experiment with slightly larger/heavier hooks.
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (RobVT3)
I tested all my suspending baits in the sink once (made sure it was colddd water) and out of all of them, only 2 x-raps actually suspended. I have to add suspend-dots to other x-raps, rogues, and pointers.
I like the idea of lead wire on the treble hook http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (cgs2004)
As far as the X-Raps the XR10's float slowly and the XR8's sink slowly. I haven't had either that will suspend out of the box, I normally have to add either suspend strips or lead wire (both have already been mentioned)
Re: Suspending Rogue question. (pastormark)
I've been through this alot... depends on water temp some... also depends on the actual color you got... some the the gitter gel coated colors actually suspend better than others with less "finish" on them... FYI this hold true for LC too...
I try and play with hooks first, some brands a little heavier than others in the same size... I keep a bunch of the big copper rapala split rings handy too, this helps get a bait fine tuned... then you can add suspend dots...
