I have never tried this method of fishing yet. Could some of you folks please explain to me, how to rig this set-up and how to fish it. Also, what are the advantages of fishing this method. Is this basically a deep water presentation? What types of baits do you usually use. A picture of this rig would really help. I would really like to try a new method of fishing. Thanks.
i will add............ the biggest thing that is overlooked. when dropshotting, use your electronics!!! if you don't see the fish, don't drop it! grand slam television hooksets are not needed. typically with this technique, the fish will hook themselves, so a nice firm twitch of the wrist is usually all that is needed to set the hook.
You can fish it anywhere. Does not matter what the depth is. Cast it to the bank and work back tothe boat if you want. Works for me. Make sure it has good action if working steadily. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
everyone I have talked to about drop shotting suggest just letting it sit with slight tension on the line. I don't see any reason you would want to fish it back to the boat...

I've had good luck with just letting the wind drift me over a flat dragging a drop shot along.
You can cast and retrieve a drop shot much like a C-rig, it presents the bait off the bottom.
you can use this rig anywhere, it depends on th length of your leader. 6 in around docks is a fun way to fish it. use a weight that allows you to maintain contact with the bottom. you dont have to do much to get great action on the lure. i like roboworms on it. just go out and try it , youll probally get hooked on it like i did

Just like anything else in fishing... everyone has thier own techniques and secrets. Find what works best for you and use it.

I never cast a drop shot bait to the bank any ways... I use it in 15-80 feet of water on offshore structures (humps, channels, flats, etc). If I wanted the same type of "off the bottom" presentation and wanted to be casting to structure to work it through, I'd be throwing a carolina rig. I have also found I get more hookups fishing it directly below my boat and finding the stretch point of my line.
Another tip I strongly suggest is make sure your bait is vertical and not sitting on the bottom along side your weight. Once you have cast out your bait and you are no longer feeding slack to find the bottom, find your weight on your line and then allow it to drop back to the bottom, now you are truly vertical. My buddy had a tough time in a tourny last weekend because he wasn't getting his bait vertical, while I was pulling fish in every few minutes...
Actually if the fish are suspended maybe four or five feet off the bottom, a cast DS will present the bait at their level better than a C-rig.
If your lake has boat docks or standing timber, try pitching it. It falls straight down and is a good way to boat a lot of fish. It's like night crawler fishing.
Cast out let it sit for as long as you can stand it. If no bites reel back and cast out to a new key location. I have also had luck just casting to the bank and draging back as slow as you can stand it.
Just started drop shotting this year. I've been using it in shallow water. Gave me another presentation on the edges of weed beds when the bass stop chasing. It was very productive http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif . Did extremely well this spring on really shallow points too.

you can fish it many many ways, i have done the best sitting near a deeper ledge and kindly paralleling it (throwing diagonally along the shallow lip then dragging it off into deeper water) i use it just like a carolina rig but the weight is on bottom and the worms are a little higher up. sometimes i let it sit still and just twitch it some. it all depends on what the fish want. Yeah, i did say "worms" i tie 2 hooks about 14" apart and i use 2 different colored worms and styles on my rig, and one thing that i found out is on any given day they will seem to prefer one over the other, i don't know if it is because one is a little more shallow than the other or if it is that i use one darker color like green pumpkin or black, and on the other i use red or brighter colors like zoom bullfrog which has a pumpkin color on top and a greenish yellow color on bottom almost chartreuese but more yellow?
i do know when they're schooled up in 18-25' of water they tend to hit it better for me than a regular carolina rig. i also like it where i can find a ditch running across a flat near the river channel. i haven't caught any hogs yet but this last july in almost 100 deg. weather i was catching 3 and 4 lber's on it.
I just started drop shotting and still learning alot.I catch alot of short fish on it. is there any way to get bigger bites on it?I usally use a 4" worm or a robo worm on it open hook witha 1' to 3' leader
I've drop shot with a texas rigged meathead or other small arse worm, it works where a rig can't. Just as Blades said, presents the bait off the bottom as you drag it off a shelf or structure. Drop shot isn't just for vertical presentation with a circle hook as the original method intended.
