Well it really might only be about 1/16-1/8 of play front to back still dont know if this is normal

Not Eddie, but I think thats normal, mine has always had 1/16 to1/8 ths play.
I was out jackin with mine after reading this and mine has bout a 1/16 too

Yours is normal for a standard rotation gearcase. that is the freeplay bewteen the reverse gear and back side of the clutch dog splines and a steel washer in the middle of them.
Your first post's measurement of 3/8" would be impossible unless someone or something did an awful lot of grinding metal away
Around .070 " is usually max on endplay. A lot of problematic things can create more, such as the rear bearing carrier moving back due to sloppy lock tab slots, or housing breakage, or someone forgot to install the spacer washer in front of reverse gear, or the corresponding machined surface in reverse gear is worn. There are many reasons excess endplay can exist, the thing to do is find out why, before possible serious damage results. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif
