Evinrude lower unit advice??
Gears went through the case yesterday on my 1998 Evinrude 150. From the boards here, it seems this is a weakness for that era evinrude. My question is: What is the best replacement to prevent this again? Are there heavy duty options? any expertise would be appreciated.

Swede, Yes, gearcases are prone to be the weak link of the typical outboard motor. Changes in powerhead technology have been awesome in the last 30 years, guess what has'nt changed. There have been some introductions in the last few years that are bigger and beefier, namely the "Magnum" case. This is a nice piece and durable, unfortunately, they are still vulnerable to fishing line being tangled in the propshaft or unseen objects under the water. If you can stay away from these perils, the Magnum is a big step in the right direction. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif

Thanks! Where is the best place to buy a magnum? Also, what is the deal with the difference in price for the standard LU? They typically go for $2100 to $2300 for a rebuilt, but this place sells new ones for $795 with no core charge?? http://www.dockpartner.com

The 795.00 cases seem to be a pretty good deal right now, especially with the warranty they offer. The big difference in these and the Magnum cases is the Country of origination from where they're coming. (pricewise) http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/popcorn.gif
Re: Evinrude lower unit advice?? (gearcaseman)
You seem hesitant to say they are just as good. Are they made in Taiwan or something?
Re: Evinrude lower unit advice?? (Swede)
That is my understanding. I can't honestly say on the quality, but if the warranty is good, they would be hard to beat for that kind of money. A new factory housing, empty, cost over 1400.00. I can't figure this one! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif
