Help with Mercury Warranty Coverage

I have a corrosion issue on the forward part of the midsection by the tie bar attachment point on all 3 engines as well as paint flaking off all 3 lower units. My mechanic contacted Mercury and was told that it’s just cosmetic and to just repaint them. I have read that Mercury replaced LU’s with paint issues as the labor to repaint wouldn’t be worth it. Any repainted items have never held up. What’s the point of a corrosion warranty if blistering / flaking paint isn’t covered? Am I getting accurate information??

From what you said it sounds like Mercury IS honoring the warranty, just going the cheapest route. I repainted my own lower unit where paint was gone using Merc's primer and paint. It still looks better than the rest of the motor. It's all about surface prep. Hopefully your dealer takes the time to do it right. Yes, some have had new lower units changed out by Merc. I can't see how that is more cost effective than sanding, priming, spraying with Merc's rattle cans. Perhaps Mercury realizes that now...PLUS you have 3 big engines! Let them do it and if/when their finish flakes off it's their problem again.

Just to clarify, you're talking about two different things here. Corrosion warranty does not guarantee that you will never have corrosion- or that cosmetic changes won't occur. It covers against FAILURES due to corrosion, with a few stipulations.

Gearcases replaced due to paint problems are usually within a specific production range where a higher than normal paint adhesion problem can occur. Doesn't necessarily cover all gearcases, or even various (or different) models.

Both of these items are things you should work with your local dealer, who can photograph and submit that information to Mercury, as well as work with them to recommend a suitable method to address.
