My boat does not have a hose option to flush the motor so I have to use muffs. My inlaws suzuki does. Is that hose option just for running water through to flush the system out when it's not running or can I run the motor while the hose is attached to that flushing hole?
The flushing ports are used when the motor is not running. I usually use the external ports if I run in muddy water or run across a sand bar by accident and need to flush the mud out.
1. Do not start the motor when only connecting the hose to the flushing port. Stated clearly in the Suzuki owners manual. Flushing using the flushing port without the engine running actually works very well.
2. start the motor when flushing using the muffs. The best muffs to use on most Suzukis are the small round soft cup ones, and put them on from the prop end. Yes that sounds weird to put them on from that end but its what my Suzuki dealer does to all engines when they service them, and it works, they seal better and stay in position. The large rectangular cup muffs just dont suit the leg shape and dont seal as well.
I have heard that some people put 2 hoses on, one on the muffs and another on the flushing port, and then run the engine. This probably works but I suspect they only do that because they cant get the rectangular muffs to do the job properly by themselves - go back to point #2 and you wont need to do it.
I will sometimes flush my engine using the muffs, and then turn it off and switch to the flushing port with the engine off so I can go and fillet fish while its flushing on a timer tap, that way I can give it a really long thorough flush without needing to worry about the engine overheating while I am not supervising. I have a rule that I NEVER go away while the engine is running on the muffs, always stay close by supervising.
