Smallmouth bass, along with other fish, do not know what type of mechanical device I’m using to pull them back to the boat. They will try to shake the bait either way! They also don’t know if I’m using mono, braid or flouro.
Spinning gear for Sallies?
Many smallie tactics are deep water finesse techniques which are generally done with spinning tackle. I like spinning reels and baitcasters equally; I just need the right reel for the right presentation.
My son and I were in kayaks in the Buffalo small boat harbor busting SMB on ned rigs with 6# line on spinning rods a couple weeks ago. There were 3 bass boats with guys hammering them with casting poles. The fish don’t care. Of course we were all walleye fishing since bass season wasn’t open. Pesky things kept getting on the line.
For the most part here on Erie, Ontario and St Clair you are fishing finesse baits like a ned tube, drop shot etc... so spinning gear is very common. I do throw the sniper jig and my crankbaits on baitcasters however.
I never caught a "sallie" are they a freshwater or saltwater species ? LOL
Lighter line, smaller baits, better drags, longer casts.
I still use both for smallmouth and largemouth.
Lighter baits thrown is usually the reason. Up until recently, it was tuff to throw a 1/64 oz ned type bait on a baitcaster.
Spinning Gear for Sallies would instantly be the most popular sub-group in BBC
