want to be a better fisherman

i am 29 have fished all my life but have allways been a worm and wait kinda guy.
i just recently finished a boat restoration and now fish the local lakes every chance i get( which is often) but i don't know much about how to catch the differnet fish. i can get catfish all right working channels and every now and then i get luky with a spiner bait in the weeds. but it seam like there are guys that allways catch fish. even when people say fishing is bad. and i can have a complete strike out when people say fishing is good. so just wondering if there are any clubs or groups that meet or have group trips ect. so i could learn from others and such. im in around north houston, tx.
