I am thinking about next years spring trip and Amistad keeps coming up as an option. What do you guys think? Is that the best destination in the great state of Texas right now for BIG fish? It sure is getting alot of press. How is pretty boys resort on the lake?
I will be staying at Byron's place in October. The one place I stay the most is Anglers Lodge. They are nothing fancy by any means but they do have the best breakfast taco's. These people wiil take care of you also. I was down there for a week and the washing machine they had was broke. So the lady tells me to give her my clothes that I needed washed and she'll wash them with her laundry. She slipped the bag of clothes in the room at midnight. You can't get service like that any more now days.
Don't worry about the pressure that Amistad has been getting. There is plenty of water that doesn't get pressured. Also, go ahead and get a Mexico liscence. Some will tell you not to get the thing, but there is sure some good water over there and if you go up the Rio Grande you might be able to see some wild Mustangs. If you go into the Devils, you might be able to catch a Smallmouth. But for the bigger fish stay on the main lake and in the Rio Grande side of the lake.
From your location, there are many that are "As good" as Amistad here in Texas (Rayburn, Toledo, etc), but none compare to the terrain and the surroundings of Amistad.........Looking from the cost standpoint of distance from above mentioned to Amistad is substantial. Damn...talk about quick. Thanks for the info Mark and Bobby. Yeah, the drive would be a PIA and would burn 2 full days. My friend and I went to Baccarac this past Jan. and was hoping for a double digit fish and neither of us succeeded. That is pretty much our goal on any trip we take now...unless it's for the brown fish. On that note, it might be an idea to hit Fork on the way. Whaddyathink? Personally I would spend more time down at Amistad. Fork really isn't that far from you is it? Amistad is just a great lake and holds huge fish. The scenery it self is worth going.
To piggy-back on Mark, make sure you get your Mex license and a permit for your boat. There is talk that in January that you'll also have to have passport. The best source of info is the web site for Falcon lake and tackle. They can also mail you the Mex license and boat permit, which is a pretty good idea because the tackle shops have been known to run out in the spring. You definitely would not want to drive all the way down and only be able to fish the American side for a couple of days.
Falcon is an awesome lake also. It is south of Amistad. BASS is going there this spring. You might check ist out for a couple of days along with Amistad.

Nothing to worry about fishing the Mexican waters other than having your light line broken by a hawg!!

On a sad note, the owner of Falcon Lake Tackle past away the other day. He was truley a very helping man to fisherman that came into his shop.
I hate to hear that about the owner. I went to their website and saw the message about not being in the store for a doctors appt. and knew that someone had bad health.
Alright, next question...do you know of any reputable guides @ Amistad or anyone that I should stay away from? Is there a web site for Texas bass guides? I e-mailed Amistad Lake Resort and a guide named James J. Burkeen e-maild me back. Know anything about this fellow?

bill, all the above is good advice...my 2cents..make reservations asap as spring is crazy on this lake now. also B.A.S.S. is not the only BIG tourny happening..basschamps, flw, federation and several other large organizations have there big spring tournys there. last year i fished the week before the B.A.S.S. (sun thru sat). it was a hoot..had breakfast with paul elias and several others every morning. wayyy tooo much fun!!!!!!!!!
j.c.gwynn " the amistad man" is a great guy and will help you with anyhting you need...830 719 9006 or 830 768 0605 .another guide i have used is ray hanselman. very good stick but is usually very busy with spring bookings. again need to call early. i would highly suggest a guide for 1 to two days to get a feel for whats happening. you WILL catch fish! i've been fishing there steady for 3 years now and have never heard ANY bad reports about fishing in mexico waters..just check on this passport deal in jan and you should be set!!! tight lines...bill http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif
