Mercury 200HP making oil on break in??

I have around 7.5 hours on my break in on a 2021 Mercury 200HP 4 stroke on a 2021 Falcon 195. I noticed the motor puffing smoke on start ups which I have read is common and decided to check the oil it is at the top of the top yellow beads cold maybe slightly over that. Oil has a gas smell to it I fear im making oil and the rings have not set is that normal? Im sure some gas is going to sneak past the rings in break in. I did the break in by the book thus far. One thing I could not do is run it past about 5400 RPMs from the chime walking 65 was my Top speed at 5400RPMs . Do I need to run it to 6K RPM playing with the jack plate? to help seat the rings? Its the only thing I have not done I have done the heating cycles and under 3500RPM 1st hour varied under 4500 2nd hour and ran it no more than 1 minute WOT for every 10 minute of running. I have not ran it WOT for longer than 5 minutes. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

They will ask you for the motor serial number in order to post. There's a lot of great information on that forum.

Back to the Dealer.

Riding around trimming up isn't breaking it in. Load that sob down fill livewells and find some fat buddies make that motor work to get them rings to seat.

If the oil level is above the top bead it is too full. If these V8s are overfilled they will puff smoke at cranking. Mine was overfull from dealer as well.

To add to that. During your first two hr breakin you were supposed to run it wot for 1 minute every ten. By the time you get out of the two hr you can run her wot just not for an extended period. Get out and beat on it some, babying it is a bad thing during the early hrs

It sounds like you are doing everything right on the break-in, Maybe the motor was raised to high when trailering to the boat ramp, Maybe you started the motor raised to high, try to keep the motor down the next time you start it. These motors should not have any smoke under normal conditions.
If it does it again take it back to the dealer.

Yeah I never trimmed it up till the 3rd hour just to get the RPMs up. Then back to trimmed down pushing water.

Stop plowing water at lower rpm borrow a lower pitch prop and let it run to just under the limiter at full throttle. I would have fresh oil in it also. Warm it up good then run it hard!. Cj

Regardless of marine or automobile engines, rings should "seat" 95% of the way within the first few cycles of the piston moving. With modern honing finishes, and ring technology, the idea of seating rings should be a thing of the past.

When rings appear not to seat, it's generally because of a bore that isn't perfectly round. Rings need to spin (or at least have freedom of motion) on the piston, and when the bore isn't round, the gaps will sometimes line up, leading to more blow-by on cold startup and running. Even a "gapless" ring will have different radial tension distribution if the bore isn't round.

Too much oil can also significantly increase windage, causing foaming and smoking. Too much oil on the cylinder walls can also cause increased blow-by of fuel into the oil, as the increased crankcase pressure and hydrodynamic film can cause the rings to "skip" along the bore if severe enough.
