Help warning horn

E150STLCEM/ R08205884 1989 150XP.
Hi all: I replaced the shift controls about a month ago with newer version and adpter for this engine. Last week left key on for 1 1/2 days, warning horn came on to notify me. After turning off everything seemed fine went out for a nite of fishing and when I started the engine on the way back the warning horn went off and as long as the the key is turned on the horn goes off, whether the engine is running or not.
Question one: could I have shorted the horn leaving it on for that extended period?

Since engine is not on and horn goes off it can't be overheating of the engine???

Service manual does not cover this, so before tackling I'm asking for suggestions?
Can anyone help me????

turn the key to ON and while the horn is sounding, disconnect the wires from the oil tank where they meet inside the engine.

So are you able to hook the wires back up? I would think that warning buzzer is on there for a reason.

the LOW OIL warning is not that important a feature if you check the oil level often or when you fill the gas tank.

Yes Tom I was able to hook it upo and the sound went away. Sea Horse said it is the wiring inside the pick up that is shorted. I have another Tank assembly so if it continues I will replace it. My tank was 7/8 full went it went off,so it read it wrong because of the short I pressume. Let me know if yours worked I won't get on the water till tuesday nite.

If the solid sounding horn goes OFF when you disconnect the VRO tank wires, then there is a short inside the tank that has already been mentioned above.

I had the same thing happen several years ago on one of my same vintage Evinrudes.
You can replace the internal guts of the tank but I found a brand new complete VRO tank on eBay reasonably priced.
I replaced the tank and the solid sounding horn went away.

You might also want to check the new tank (or internal guts) before you fill the tank.
1. Hook up the new tank (or internal guts).
2. Turn on the Ignition key
You should hear a momentary sound every 20 seconds. This is your LOW OIL warning horn.
3. If the low oil warning sound works properly, fill your tank with oil and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the great info. I wasn't able to dig into mine today. I do have a tourney in a couple of weeks and will need to have this sucker in tip-top shape. I'll burn thru 50 gallons that weekend.
