Questions on first run with new 2008 225H.O.?

Just came back from the first weekend out with my new 225 HO. Put about 2 hours on it and the oil tank is down over an inch. Does this seem high evne for the break in?
Kept my old 1998 gauges and showed that I ran it up to 6200rpm at 57.7 mph on a 21 Viper.
I was told there is a rev limiter, so wondering if my gauges are off as I thought the top rpm was 5800 or so.
Can anyone tell me if there is a limiter and if not, what max rpm should I not go beyond? Setting for XD100 set by dealer.
The top speed is what I thought I would get, but figured it would be more around the 5800.
Only other feedback I have is on my 98 FICHT 150, according to the tach, I ran it up to 52-5300, but in the engine software, showed 0% at 5000+, so it is possible my tach is off.

I would after reading your post have your tachometer checked for accuracy. Your boat should be propped to run no higher than 5800rpm at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). When the rpm reaches 5850 rpm, the computer (EMM) is programmed to add extra oil to protect the motor. This is probably why you may have used more oil than was normal even when running over 2000rpm, which is break in mode for 2 hours.

6200rpm is just under the hard limiter which is aprox 6400RPM. There is a soft limiter which activates around 6150rpm. Also, my understanding is that for 2008 there is an XD100 setting but is not suggested. Two reasons being that you cannot run this setting using ANY other oil other than XD100 oil so if you are caught short one day AND are unable to obtain more XD100 then it could do harm to your engine to run any other oil other than the XD100. Another reason is that XD100 oil is recomended if you run in freezing temperatures. That being said it would be far more convenient to have the engine set to the TC-W3 setting & run the best oil for your E-Tec which is XD100. In the event of you being short of XD100 then your engine will happily accept any TC-W3 rated oil.

It appears that your earlier engine was lugging all its life. It should have been propped to around 5500rpm.

I spoke to BRP customer support today and he stated that there is no setting for the XD-100 on the 2008 model. You just start using the XD-100 and that is it. I looked in my owners manual and it states that it can be set to use to the XD-100 and reduce oil consumption. I look at it like this, they can't go wrong by telling you to use the more expensive stuff and at the increased rate. It might make your engine last long enough to get through the warranty period. However, I bought this engine with the understanding that I could choose this option. There should only be one right way period. Just my TCW.

Hi e-tec, on 2008 model "HO" engines that are more prone to high load and RPM than non HO models, the factory has done away with the changable setting. That is as customer support told you, it is best to still use XD-100 and even on the default setting you are not going to use alot of oil. Non HO E-TEC still have the abiltiy to change the usage and as always it is best to use XD-100 oil in any E-TEC.

I imagine the owners manual is the one for all the 3.3L E-TEC from 200-250 and is not specific to just the HO models and that is why it mentioned the oil ratio business. At the end of the day, the little extra oil you will use will not cost you alot and you can be confident that the engine is getting the right amount of oil needed for here when you are running at 5800.

So my understanding is there is no setting for this engine as far as the oil is concerned? Sounds like a don't trust the customer thing to me. The technology is there, so why not use it?
Since there is no setting, does anyone know what the setting is and how much more oil it puts in the engine?
My thought is if I run XD100 all the time, I am not getting the full power economy benefit if the engine is not set to the 100 setting. If so, then why do it, save $$$ and run the XD50 like my old engine.
If they want us to run the oil, they should allow us to have the setting. Just seems to make sense. For those who are unprepared and run out of oil where they cannot get the stuff, set their engines to the 50 setting, but for those of us that carry a spare jug in the boat, give us the proper setting.

Hi taz, your call mate, you can run XD-50 if you choose in your "HO" engine, it is fine oil but not the best like XD-100, which is the preferred oil from BRP for any E-TEC. I have the 225DI HO and I run nothing except XD-100 in that and it is like your 08 model "HO" only E-TEC and does not use alot of oil.

Just my 2 cents worth on this oil debate, but in my mind if I have a performance product I do not mind spending a bit more to run the best lube in it. Do as we do here at our shop, find a dealer that buys the oil in bulk and bring in your empty XD-100 bottle and we charge our customers the same for refills of XD-100 than factory filled XD-50 bottles.

Hi Huey, you are right on the manual covering all 3.3's. My dealer is not aware that you can't change the setting because they told me to put about 10 hours on it before I come back to have it changed. One of the reasons I purchased the E-TEC engine was that I thought I would not have to add oil as frequently. I guess that is just water under the bridge now. That is a nice service you provide to your customers (bulk oil) and I am sure they appreciate it. Can you mix the XD-50 with the XD-100?

Huey, wish there was a dealer that offered some bulk price. I have tried to find one, but no luck up here in Canada. I am in Manitoba and would even consider shipping it from another province, but have not found a dealer that discounts for bulk.
I guess as has been said, water under the bridge, just wish the setting could be done to maximize everything on the engine, from lowering oil consumption to maximizing the technology. I guess BRP just wants to limit potential warranty claims at the expense of the customer (in more oil purchased) I wish there was some kind of rebate or discount that BRP would give customers who purchased a non programable engine, but are willing to run the 100, then everyone would win, they can keep the claims down without programming and the customers can be happy that they are saving some $$$ as if their engines were programmed to use less oil. Just my 2 cents.

Keep in mind tazmnaz that the E tec double oils for for the first 10 hrs. or so above 2000 rpms. It should will use a lot less after that. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
