Do you need a Weighted Tag in NC?

I am not sure the best place to post this so I will put it here.
I called the DMV office and they said you need to have a tag with enough weight to cover what is connected to the tow vehicle. I have Chevy 1500 which weighs about 5k and I have a plate rated for 6k GVWR. I have a Triton TR20 that I assume will weight about 2500-3000 pounds. So my GVW will be 7500-8000 pound. So it sounds like I need to get a weighted tag. However, I keep hearing RV's and boats are exempt and that you only need a weighted tag for commercial use. Has this changed?

My dad went through it in WV, and atleast here, recreational vehicles are exempt. Our camper weighs 14,000lbs and no weighted tags.

You dont need a tag, your GVWR is your truck and payload (people and tongue weight of the boat) Your GCWR is the truck + payload + boat. No additional tag needed in NC for that weight.

    peace out

Let me tell you how smart the people are including the troopers, my buddy has a 05 crew cab 2500 duramax chevy, he also has a gooseneck lowboy and a john deere backhoe!! Well he got pulled and we all know he was over weight and it really was not safe for him to be towing it, but he was in the back woods going about 10 miles down the road, well he got pulled and his truck is rated for around 11k well he weighed out at 36k, the trooper tells him to just go pay for a tag ratted for 40k and he would be good to go!!

As far as your boat goes you are fine!!
