How do i install rod struts to all my compartments ? One of my concerns is the screws that come with the struts looks like it will stick up thru the carpet if drilled into the lid?

I just posted a thread on a similar question. Mine is, however, how did you determine the size (length and weight) of the struts you purchased? There are so many different combinations how do you know what will work?
I drilled and bolted through the lids, when tightened down they hide under carpet
