So the fuse for my bilge pump keeps blowing. Not sure when exactly it happens. Trying to figure out why. Has happened 3 times in the last 3 months. Any ideas?

Sounds like a short, probably caused by a leak into the pump or a nick in the hot wire (+) insulation at or below the water level in the bilge. Many years ago I had a pump that was dying a slow death and just would not spin sometimes and that would cause it to blow the fuse.
could be something stuck in it. I had a rubber jig tail stuck in mine.
Pull it and tap it hard to disslodge any fish pieces or sand
hmmmmm, gonna have to try all these. Thanks guys
It's easy to take the pump cartridge out of the housing and clean the housing out good. You can also turn it on with the cartridge removed and confirm that she spins freely and doesn't bind up or "squeal like a Pig"...
My LW pump was doing the same thing, intermittent fuse blowing and it ended up being the pump itself... I also took a resistance measurement across the pump winding and it was extremely low, can't remember the exact reading at the moment...
They are very easy to replace and Ranger makes them very accessible. As I recall you've the RT series, correct?

Yes, RT, will work on it this weekend. This has caused a whole nother issue. Had to take my 3 bank charger out in order to get to pump, now where to mount charger so it doesn;t get in way of pumps. Etc.

The pumps in a RT188 are a royal PITA. I miss my Cat's every time I have to do anything to the pumps in my Ranger. Neither are as bad as my old Champion 187. That one had a pump under the gas tank.
Hope you get it figured out.
Must be a bit different than the 198, cause mine are easy to get to...

Question: Pulled the cartridge while it was on the water to try and flush it, it is now running but that’s with a 15 amp fuse instead of a 5.
1. Can using a 15 amp hurt? I will get it replaced ASAP with a 5 amp.
2. So a pebble lodged can blow fuses? Maybe when I flushed it it dislodged.
3. How would I know if it the cartridge just need to be replaced?
Thanks!!!
Yes a 15 amp fuse used where a 5 amp is called for can hurt. But it can also help you find out where the problem is, just look for the smoke.
A too large fuse won't blow when it should. The wires are designed (size wise) for a 5 amp current. If your pump is drawing 12/15 amps, then the next thing to "let go" will be the insulation on the wires. Sparks and a fire could be the result of that.
Right now, put a 5 amp fuse back in. If it blows, then you still have a problem with either the pump's motor or something that is jammed in it. If it doesn't blow, then you may be lucky and you have knocked out the piece of sand or whatever was jamming the motor.
I think I can get fuses at wal mart and academy - yes?
And any auto store.
