Question 2004 Stratos 285 Magnum Bass Boat

    I'm looking at this 2004 285 Magnum with a 2007 Mercury 150hp Efi 2 stroke.

The boat looks nice and has a lot of electronics that I want. Talons, Ultrex, big screen graphs. The only issue I have is the motor. Is it under powered? I know the Magnum is rated for 175hp outboard I believe. Current owner says it can get to 65mph no problem. That's a whole lot faster then my currnet 20hp deepv aluminum boat turned bass boat. should I be concerned about this?

Technically it is not "underpowered". I have a 2004 285 ProXL with a 150 G2 HO, no Talons, and best case under best conditions can hit 61.5 MPH GPS. No way in hell that boat is going 65 unless you weigh 120lbs and it has Lithium batteries. A 175 would be a better option on that rig.

My boat is 18' 9" and rated for 175 HP but it has a 150 HP motor. I have owned it for 18 years and at no point have I felt underpowered...I have two talons and have never seen 65 GPS. On the speedometer I have seen it touch 68 but boat speedometers are notorious for being highly inaccurate. It's a GPS speed 58-62 mph ride pending load and conditions. I suspect the boat you have in question will be the same.

The 285 Magnum is a standard 285 Pro XL which max rating is 150HP. If you ordered the "Magnum package" (6" jack plate, hotfoot and blinker trim) they raised the rating to 175. A lot of 285s were rigged with 150hp engines and they run just fine. I ordered mine with 6" jack plate, hotfoot and blinker trim, but it was only rated at 150hp. When I asked the dealer why mine was only rated at 150hp, he said because I didn't order the "magnum package" even though I optioned the boat with the same options that were in the "magnum package".

So this Stratos has the Magnum package with the merc 150 with 227 hours on it. Ultrex 112 w/ i-Pilot Link, Helix 9, Solix 12, Hot foot pedal, Hydraulic Jack Plate, Talon 10 foot x2, Talon Jackplate Adapter Bracket, cover, new batteries and marinco 30 amp charger.

    Selling it for $1975

    Worth it?

No F’n way I’d sell mine at that price even if it had the original Johnson 150 on it. $16,500 - $14,500 is where this should be.

Yes I am. It no longer listed on Kijiji so maybe he sold it. It was listed for $25,999.00 Canadian. Which is according to google conversion its $19,745.65 USD.

He also had a bunch of rods and tackle included in the price. I really don't care for the gear, I'm looking for a boat not someone elses used gear.

I totally agree! It seems bass boats in canada get listed way over the value. I'm not looking at USA market and finding much better boats. My new game plan is to research boats and motors and find one that I like in the States, take a road trip and get me a new rig next season.
