What is proper update procedure?

I just want to be certain to do things the right way. I have a Carbon 12, a Carbon 9 and a HDS9 Gen3 that all have had very little to no use at all. I purchased them over the past 2 years as I was rebuilding my boat in anticipation of getting it back on the water. Well, I'm at that point. So I'm shifting away from the focus on completing the rebuild-restoration to making sure the electronics and what not all work and are up to date. I really have no major waypoint database to be concerned with. I use HotMaps Platinum for charts, and it's current.

So updating these units, what procedure should I follow? I've read where sometimes a hard reset (if I have the terminology correct) is recommended after the update. I just want to be clear on what I should do and then move on from there. Thanks

Update one at a time with the others off, and do a hard reset after updating.
