    Rod/Reel recommendations

Looking at getting spinning combo for my trip to Rosemary Beach, FL in September. Probably just fish off the beach, early and late. I'm looking at a shimano stradic 4000. The FK's are on clearance, now. What kind of rod should I get? Do I want a surf casting rod, or just a 7' - 7'6 inshore rod? Brand? Would like to keep the total at $300 or less, since this won't be used very often.

I have used a few cheap rods made for freshwater from the beach when starting out, everyone of them the eyes started to rust and such after a year or so. I would look for a saltwater rod that's 7-8ft. Plenty of good options from Penn that are pretty cheap and rated for the salt water use.

For the money it’s hard to beat the Penn Battle II combos or the Daiwa BG combos. I’ve been using the Battle’s with no issues but just started using the new BG reels and like them a lot better.

If all I need is a 3000 series spinning reel, I am set. I already have a Shimano Saros 3000 sitting in the garage. I just need to get a rod, then.

I love my Tica's. I have an 8 and 10 ft for surf fishing. In the $150 range at my local tackle shop. Paired up with a KastKing Sharky iii 3000 live liner and you're all set for the surf. 20lb braid and you can cast lures or bait rigs.

Would you recommend 15-20lbs braid and leader or just straight mono or FC?

Braid and leader. Set your drag easy and crank it down as you need it.

If you can throw a cast net use whatever you pull in with that. Otherwise shrimp is always a good go to. I don’t throw many lures in the surf. For me I like to find a productive looking spot then throw the bait and just enjoy fishing on the beach. After a little bit move somewhere else if you’re not catching.
