Several years ago I was doing some chores and a horse we had at that time was set on getting my attention. The horse's antics continued until I finally gave in and walked over to the corral. To my amazement, there was a pup cuddled up in the hay pile. Other than being a little malnourished, the pup was in good health. He appeared to be a stock dog mix breed, so I made a few inquiries thinking he possibly belonged to a local rancher. My grandfather raised cattle and had several stock dogs of this same type. Nobody claimed the pup,so we took him to the local vet for a check-up. The vet and staff commented on taking him if he needed a home. Well, we kept the pup, named him Tanner and he soon became a significant part of the family.Tanner and I became inseparable and he would almost always be at my side. For over 15 years he slept on the floor by my side of the bed. A simple snap of my fingers or a whisper of his name and he would be at my side. When I was away on business he would spend most of his time focused on the door awaiting my return. I cannot hardly remember a time when he didn't greet me at the door upon my arrival. Over the past few months his health took a downturn and he spent most of his time on his pillow. Yesterday, I made one of the hardest decisions in my life as we made a final trip to the vet. Such a loyal companion for almost 16 years. I will sorely miss him.
Today I stand at the door alone.
