    Alone at the Door

Several years ago I was doing some chores and a horse we had at that time was set on getting my attention. The horse's antics continued until I finally gave in and walked over to the corral. To my amazement, there was a pup cuddled up in the hay pile. Other than being a little malnourished, the pup was in good health. He appeared to be a stock dog mix breed, so I made a few inquiries thinking he possibly belonged to a local rancher. My grandfather raised cattle and had several stock dogs of this same type. Nobody claimed the pup,so we took him to the local vet for a check-up. The vet and staff commented on taking him if he needed a home. Well, we kept the pup, named him Tanner and he soon became a significant part of the family.Tanner and I became inseparable and he would almost always be at my side. For over 15 years he slept on the floor by my side of the bed. A simple snap of my fingers or a whisper of his name and he would be at my side. When I was away on business he would spend most of his time focused on the door awaiting my return. I cannot hardly remember a time when he didn't greet me at the door upon my arrival. Over the past few months his health took a downturn and he spent most of his time on his pillow. Yesterday, I made one of the hardest decisions in my life as we made a final trip to the vet. Such a loyal companion for almost 16 years. I will sorely miss him.
Today I stand at the door alone.

Very sorry for your loss of Tanner. Special animals like that can make a place in your heart.

I'm thinking both of you were very fortunate to have been there for each other.

Sorry for your tremendous loss. I too lost my companion some time ago. You'll always have the memories.

Give him a nice resting place and a stone marker....sounds like he deserves it.

had one earlier this week that i had to let go, tough thing to do, but seeing them in less than good health/poor health and suffering is really selfish on our part to keep them "hanging on" doesn't make it any easier but knowing mine is not suffering anymore is somewhat comforting, even though i miss him terribly

and he gave me a bunch of great memories

So hard to put one down even knowing you are doing the right thing.

Somewhat like having to take a loved one off of life support.

    A very sad day
