    461 vs chine walk

Repowered my 96 461vs with a 2019 150 pro xs 4s. Currently has a 24 tempest on it. The boat never had a lick of chine walk in it before the repower. Old set up was 150 Efi off shore with a 23 merc high 5. Motor heights are the same. Obviously I’ve added about 55 lbs to the back of the boat with the swap.

question 1. Will pulling weight out of the boat help or make it worse? (Lithium)

question 2.. how do I adjust it to get rid of chine move motor down a hole? Old set up ran rather flat less bow lift never walked and was 3 mph faster.

Is there a jackplate? Sounds like this new mota is a little to low....

Also sounds like you might be feeling more bite from the new prop than from the old. Perhaps more bow lifting going on at the same time?

Typically its up but all boats are different. Taking weight out could make it worse.

I know on my 461, with a 175 OMC Fucht, I needed A LOT of trim to get bow lift. But never had any chine regardless of trim.

Bow lift is scary on this set up. It will just keep climbing hang the nose 3-4 feet out of the water if you keep trimming it. It will run flat to about 55, I trim it a little to bring it up on the pad more rpms climb speed comes up starts walking at 57 tops out at 59.6-59.9. I’m about 100lbs heavier then before between the motor swap and adding a house battery to run the pumps and graphs. I’m at about 3.5 prop to pad right now no jack plate but has built in set back in the hull.

I just want it to run like it did with the 2 stroke. I have never experienced this walk until after break in where I can run it hard. I’ve either got the motor to low/high, to much weight change in the back or the new prop is doing it. The high 5 didn’t have the bow lift the tempest has.

I should also add I had no jackplate and was mounted about 1.5in above the transom.

1.5 above on a Ranger, pretty unheard of. Regardless of the built in setback those boats need a 6 inch plate. There like a different boat w a plate. Coming up will help the chine, as well as balancing weight in the boat. Does it only do it w just you in the boat. Go away w a passenger?

I think he’s measuring from the top of the transom....the lower unit won’t run 1.5 above on that boat.

Currently I can’t run the speed where it starts to walk with passengers. 1-2 mph short. The hull ran faster with the 2 stroke 62 with the old 150 and high 5 never walked at all. Ran much flatter and had better aft lift but ran almost numeral on trim. I’ve run this hull for 5 years. I can live with losing the speed that I’ve lost. But I use to be able to drive the boat with one finger wide open no issues and now it’s a handful. Cornering sucks, it’s hard to explain. I love my 4 stroke. Just need to figure out how to get my ride back.

Go up with the motor one hole and retest. If you bury the tempest your going to get a crazy amount of bow lift and it will be harder to drive. If you go up a bump you will probably get a little more stern lift and run a smidge flatter, but faster with less chine.

sounds like motor too low and you are overtrimming. Those 461s never ran best with full trim.

It might be low. And I’m sure I’m over trimming still getting use to the trim it is single stage so it trims way faster then old motor. I’m waiting until I go lithium to finish the set up. Get this extra 100# out of the boat and go from there. I’ve only got 1 hole left it’s in the 4th now.

I’d put a 4 to 6” manual jackplate on it...
