    Replacement TM batteries

My boat was originally set up with a MG 71 lb 24v trolling motor and BPS East Penn size 27 batteries. In that set up I was getting 4 or 5 years out of the batteries. I thought that the price vs usage analysis wasn’t bad.

At the beginning of 2018 I changed to a 80lb Xi5. The batteries at that point were one year old.

I was very happy with the performance of the setup until just recently. The batteries charge up fine but I don’t get the life out of them on the water that I had been. That means I will be replacing them with less than 3 seasons on them.

When I look for replacements what is the consensus for the best bang for the buck? I don’t tournament fish so ultimate performance isn’t needed. I just don’t want to have to replace them in less than 3 years.

Wish there was something good. Bigger batteries will last longer, and a few weeks ago I’d have recommended the Everstart from Walmart, but they have been replaced by East Penns. Not nearly the capacity of the old ones. I’ll probably look to see if Autozone has a coupon for ordering online for in store pickup and get the Duralast batteries when I need them.

Thanks. I saw your post about the East Penn batteries and I certainly don’t want a lesser version of what I have now. The issue that I am having isn’t critical yet and I am hoping to finish the season and then make the change in the spring, but that may be unrealistic.

I should have some time to figure out what I want. I don’t mind paying a little more for something that will last.

My 27 batteries sit in a dual tray. I can't find one of those for 31 batteries. What is everyone doing for this, using a single 31 tray for each battery?

Sams Duracell 31s are awesome and about $95 each. They are made by Deka (East Penn) and have great specs for the money.

Undersized by quite a lot compared to other 29/31 batteries and barely bigger than a good 27. They only have 185 minute RC compared to 210 minutes for most batteries that size and 180 minutes for a good group 27.

I went to the Autozone website and was overwhelmed by how many batteries they have. Which series am I looking for?

Same battery as Deka's Grp 31 AGM. RC listed as 200 minutes. I have 2 of these running my Motorguide Xi5, and 1 for cranking and electronics ( 3 Lowrance HDS 12's, Power Pole ). 4 years without any issues. Sam's club has them on sale at times for $150's.

Yes, I have that battery as my starting battery. STRETCH1 was referring to the standard battery, which is what I have now branded with a BPS label. The difference is price - it is half the price at Sam's. I may just get those and figure if I need to replace it every 3 years so be it.

Batteries are made cheap. If you are using regular lead acid batteries anything over 2 years is a bonus.

. Fair enough but you are talking about $300 batteries. These are sub $100 each!

I just bought this dual battery tray from Bass Boat Tech, holds my 31 series batteris rock solid and a lot cheaper than the one from Bass Cat

No. Catfan was likely referring to the old Walmart Everstart Max, which were rebadged JCI/Interstate SRM 29's. They were the same size as other brands 31 series, and had a Reserve of 210, and were less than 100 dollars at Walmart. You can still get them at an Interstate dealer, but pay more.
