    TR186 equivalent

I bought a 2006 TR 186, my first Triton boat and I really like it a lot. Although it has low hours and is in good condition, I have thought about upgrading but there are so many triton models that I’m not sure which one would be a good replacement. While I was looking to buy, based on the reviews I read I was looking for this particular model as a used boat. Now that I have some experience with triton and I like them, I am considering a new one, but not sure what model. I do know when I was looking for the TR186 model, I came across the explorer line, and that’s not what I’m looking for, I think I would rather have my TR186. In any case I’m looking for a upgraded model about the same length because my garage won’t take much more than what I have, but I would like a new boat. Hopefully all that made some sense.

I had a 2001 TR186 and I loved it. Sold it in 2014. I believe the 179TrX is close to the old 186 specs, however it currently is only rated to a 115 max hp.

In '14 I purchased my 18XS which is a slightly larger boat, however it fished big. In '14 they only sold it with a 150 HP. Because of its size a 175 or 200 is a better match.

I would think the 179TrX would be a bit slow with only with a 115. The 18TrX (200 hp) and the 189TrX (175 hp) would be a better fit since it is only 2" longer than the 179TrX. You could forgo a jackplate if inches matter.

I love Tritons and these size ranges are good values for new boats. Your biggest decision is how many hp you want. The 189TrX goes 53-55 mph or so with a 150. Obviously the 175 and 200 on the 18TrX will be quicker but have a higher price point.

The 179 TRX is the same boat as the 18 Explorer an has the 115 HP max. So, the layout is identical to your 186 but with a lower HP rating and a lower stated hull weight.

The 189 TRX is the next thing up with the 18 TRX being the same hull just basically I higher trim level. It is a little longer and wider than your 186. Note that the the stated storage length for my 2008 TR186 was wrong. The catalog said 20' I think but mine was closer to 23' with the 6" jack plate. I just got a 20 TRX and the stated storage length is closer. Mine comes out to about 23'3" or so. I have to put my boat in the garage at an angle and while it does fill it up, it does fit. I think my garage is around 21x20. Not sure about your garage but you might be able to make more fit than you think. I bet the 189 or 18 would fit but just a guess of course.

I am not a current Triton owner, but I did own a TR196 for 10 years. I loved that boat and was disappointed Triton discontinued that lightning fast hull.

I have 2 fishing buddies with 18ft Tritons. 1 has a TR186 with a 150hp like yours. Ths other has a 189TRX with a 150hp. I have fished out of and driven both. The 189TRX feels much larger but is a tad slower due to its extra length and width. If I were you I would look at an 189TRX with a 175hp motor or an 18TRX with a 200hp motor.

I currently have a BassCat PII. It is 19.1ft long and has a 200hp motor. It is a rocket loaded with 2 talons and 2 people I get 70-72mph depending on conditions. It reminds me a lot of my old Triton TR196 with a 200hp.
