2014 520C Front Center lid cover loose

The screws are stripping out on the right side hinge. It came from the factory with the right hand screw inserted through a hole that was added. They must have stripped the screw in the factory hole. Now some of the others are getting where they won’t bite. It doesn’t look like I can get in behind to add a nut so a bolt is out. I really believe the carpet wrapped around is too thick because it pulls on the screws when you close it. I may trim some back.

Anyone have to to fix theirs? Curious for tips. May have to remove whole deck lid and have offset holes punched.

I’ve had to fix a few that have this problem. The lid is to big and heavy. Take the lid off (two man job) drill a new hole between each hole and put new stainless Steel screws in all the holes.

What’s the easier way to drill the stainless hinge? I have terrible luck drilling stainless.

Fill the holes with either fiberglass resin or epoxy. Redrill pilot holes and resecure.

I’ve used a drill press and start with a small hole and go up.

Also you can use 2” screws in the hole that are there now. There is another layer of fiberglass behind the hinge that will help hold.

Yes I use a 1/8” bit to drill the holes and put wd-40 on the screws before I run them in.

I drill through stainless a lot at work (i don't pay for bits) My rule is if shavings are not coming off the metal GET a NEW BIT!
A brand new cobalt drill bit should take just seconds to go through that gauge stainless

The trick to drilling stainless steel is to run the drill bit slow.

He’s not trying to drill a broken screw out. He is putting new longer screws in.
