    Voltage Question...

I am restoring a 1989 Ranger 361V that sat for the past 20 years. It amazes me at the items that still work on this boat. However, I am working on the running lights and I am probably going to replace the bases due to post corrosion. Yesterday, I pulled stern base out and the wires have a plug about 6" below the base. I unplugged it and put my multimeter leads on the black and white wires, the voltage fluctuates from 2, 3, 4, 5, then starts back over at 2 again and keeps fluctuating back to 5, over and over again. Any suggestions? Possible ground issue? Switch?

That's Morris code. Try it with a light for a load, see if the voltage stays there. Sounds like a poor connection which the meter dissipates might not really have any volts there just feed through of a bad switch.

Probably oxidation on all the connections. You can try some Caig Deoxit spray and scrub them shiny. Squirt some inside the switches and work them a bunch. You might get lucky and not have to re-do the HW and/or wire.

You have a bad connection in the light wiring, possibly the switch.
