Went to the auto parts store and rented a pulley puller and it came right off

Can usually use the butt end of a breaker bar and pry one side, then the other, and so on.

I watched the mechanic take mine off recently. He used a brass bar and a hammer and hit one side of the washer until it pops off the taper. For clarity he hit the top of the washer towards the lower unit.

I never suggest prying against the lower unit.

Use a long punch and a hammer. Tap the punch against the face of the thrust washer. That will free it.
