I would just hold the blank in the position you want and mark where the reel seat would set. I would also spiral wrap the rod as that will help with the strain.
Most folks we work with who have ergonomic requirements like this... we measure from the center of the palm to the elbow. This would be your measurement from the end of the butt to back of the reel seat. This way the rod butt will be against your side and you can use the side of your body to pin the rod to assist. It makes a longer handle but really enables all day cranking to be a lot easier.
I disgaree with spiral taking strain off. The rod is still going to load and flex the opposite direction one way or another on a CB rod (given most folks fish a crank in front and tip down - then fight tip up - constant strain in both directions)
