It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the passing of my brother, a true American hero.
Sgt Major Edward "Mac" McDermott USMC (retired) passed on to guard the pearly gates in the evening of June 25, 2019 at the age of 81. Mac joined the Marine Corps in January 1955 and served for over 30 years. During his career he attended and graduated many service schools including the Army Ranger School in 1958.
He fought in Vietnam from 1968 until 1970 as a platoon sergeant and platoon commander with 1st Battalion 5th Marines and as advisor to ARVN with MACV/SOG. His personal decorations include the Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal with Combat V and 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with Combat V and Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart Medal with 2 Gold Stars, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation with 1 Star, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with 9 Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 10 Stars, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with 1 Star, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with 2 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross Color, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Civil Actions Color Palm and Frame, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.
After retirement he went on to form the largest bass tournament club in Yuma, Arizona and guide on the lower Colorado River.
We will be spreading his ashes on the river he loved after a memorial service with full military honors on July 12.
