What heading sensor are you guys having the most success with? I'm designing a new setup and am looking to be able to have the map properly oriented even when sitting still.

I believe the only heading sensor Garmin has is the Steadycast. Its heading sensor only.

They have another one. Retails $650.
My wife asks if I'm going to fish every day. I can't fish every day. Some days I might be sick.
Steadycast is the cheap version, good enough for fishing. The 9-axis heading sensor is more expencive and way better, and a must if you intend to use it wit AP or radar. Lowrance Point-1 is worth a look though, better then steadycast, has a GPS-reciver as well and works well with Garmin.

When I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations I have a good day
The only thing with the Point 1 you cant calibrate with a Garmin unit, that i know of.....of course you could always get a buddy to do it for you. Also, as for the EC Plus and Ultra unit, i dont know if you can chose JUST the heading sensor from the Point 1 unless it pics it up automatically.

The point one is NMEA 2000 it works with my GPSMAP 1222
The garmin also works with the lowrance.
I dont have one, but Ive read in several places that you can calibrate it with any MFD - you dont need a Lowrance.
This is from one guy on another site, but the details are supposed to be in the manual as well.
How do you calibrate it on a Garmin ? The manual says that you have to connect it to a Lowrance Gen2 or at least a Gen1 to calibrate .
1. Power up everything
2. Disconnect Point-1
3. Connect Point-1
4. Perform a full steady circle within a certain time frame
5. Perform two more full steady circles
The calibration procedure is in the Point-1 manual. What having it connected to a Lowrance will do is allow you to skip steps 1 through 4 and instead press a button to initiate calibration.

Why am I hanging out here when I could be fishing.....
I use a Point-1 with 8410xsv, no issues. You should be able to do the manual calibration.
