    Rt188 help

I’ve got a 2016 rt188. 115 sho,6in atlas hydraulic jack plate, 2 talons, and currently running a 19 pitch stainless prop. GPS I’m getting 47 mph outta her. BUT at wide open I’m doing 6,200-6,600 rpms! This doesn’t seem right. That’s with the jack plate all the way down

6300 is the stated WOT of that motor. What is the height of the motor with the JP down? Where does the center of the lower unit sit in relation to the bottom of the hull? 47 sounds good with those Talons.

What are you reading rpm on? If your reading the Ranger supplied tach in the dash I guarantee you it is not right.

The boat seems like it's running pretty good with a load. Like Skeeter said, the tach is probably off some if you are using the analog in the dash. The Talons are going to slow it down some. If you have full gas and gear in summer temperatures, you are not doing bad.

I’m happy with my speed. The Rpms were just bothering me. Yeah I’m using the gauge in the dash. Is there a way to link my sho to my lowrance gen 3s?

I have a 2017 RT188 with a 115 SHO, 5.5 manual jackplate, 19p X7 Spitfire. Not sure what my prop to pad is never measured it. With 2 - 240 lb guys full talk of fuel and gear im running 48mph on GPS and analog tach shows 6200. Analog speedometer shows 55 mph. I know analog is off alot of times and the speedometer proves that. I will go digital eventually for a more accurate reading. I talked to my Yamaha mechanic and he told me not to worry about over revving due to the fact this motor has a rev limiter. Still I want to know exactly what the motor is doing. I was told also i have alot of prop slip. From all the numbers Ive seen on here for this boat seems like a good top speed.

Pretty much the max speed I've seen with a similar prop.

Don't think so.... I think the Yamaha CL hookup is about $700 to $1200. Prices are all over the place. When my boat was new, I checked the tach on the water with a Yamaha tech and his laptop in the passenger seat hooked to my motor. We checked the tach and made some other adjustments to the mapping. My tach was pretty close as compared to his computer but he said that was unusual. If the link had been more reasonably priced, I would have bought one. I could not see $1000 or so for one....but that's me. I have fished and driven and owned several different outboards for 40 years and have done fine without it.

You might go to the dealer and have them hook their computer up and check it and give you a comparative reading just for your comfort. Also, I have heard about aftermarket Gizmo that you can put on the motor around the flywheel and read the RPMs but I don't know anything about them. You might get a strobe and check it yourself if it is that important to you..... I think your boat is running pretty good...

You said you had a 19 prop... Which one is it?

Mine is hooked up to my Lowrance but it was like that when we bought it used.

I haven't looked into what it took to do it?

The guy we bought it from said it would run low 50's but I haven't had it long enough to learn to drive it that fast.

Your speed seems to be really good for the amount of gear on your boat. I’d definitely take a look at your tach and possibly have your tech check what RPMs you’re actually turning. Like he said, your motor has a rev limiter so unless it’s been raised, your tach just may be well off at high RPMS.

This is a good feature, and is essentially plug and play. It does require that you have a NMEA 2000 network installed. If you do not, an N2K starter kit is $50 - $65 depending on where you purchase it.

I had no idea that would work. I was wrong and am glad I was. I may have to look into that. Thanks for the link and the information. Hardly a day goes by that I don't learn something... hope it never stops.
