    Backing?

Curious what popular opinion is here. Do you always put backing on your reels? If you're using braid to fluoro do you put mono or other backing on first? And if your going to just use fluoro or hybrid, etc do you put braid on for backing? Thanks

I use either 6 lb mono because it sits tighter and binds good on the spool or electrical I don't feel like ones better but it's hard to cut the braid off once your are done if your using the tape method you can just snap the mono since it's so light

I've used mono backing with braid filler and capped it with flouro this works aswell but you want your 2 connection knots to be 180 degrees from each other to balance the spool I've had both the knots on one side before and you definitely loose some distance on the cast and you can feel the reel making more pressure on the one side on your cast

Old braid is the best for backing. Keeps the overall spool weight down.

All of my reels have had 10lb mono backing taped on forever. New line is also taped on to start...no knots.

Always. Cheap braid for me. Saves line and time respooling.

Always have mono backing on before any line. Expensive line is too costly to fill a spool when you’ll only use 1/4 of the line on the reel before you respool anyways. Walmart sells Zebco mono line in 300yd spools for $2.50.

Braid backing is lighter in theory it lightens up the spool which equals greater casting distance

Cheap mono for backing/filler unless its a shallow finesse spool then no filler/backing as I dont want the extra weight, which will hinder startup.

Cheap 8lb mono. Like a smaller diameter for backing. Lays nicer, and when you only want 2 layers of line it doesn't fill the spool up as much.

That’s why all my reels are JDM shallow spools. Why waste all the line you’ll never use anyways?

Cause JDM shallow spools cost substantially more than some cheap filler, and cant justify the price when it comes to throwing a half ounce chatterbait, for example.

youre shopping at the wrong places. I find them substantially cheaper than their USDM counterparts

    Teach us where to shop...

I will be impressed if a USDM, JDM, any spool, cost less than free to 50 cents worth of filler and makes a measurable difference casting lures 3/8 ounce and up. Even still if you have a source for reasonably priced shallow spools I'd love to learn about it, shallow spools certainly have a time and a place, and I would like to have more.

The only advantage you will see out of using a true shallow spool on a baitcaster, is if you are planning on tossing baits lighter than 7grams. Then, will the deletion of needing "filler" for less use of line be any advantage.

But then do you need backing for the braid to keep it from slipping on the spool? All my life I've been told to always always put mono backing under braid.
    Don't worry Ma'am....
