    Looking for vehicle navigation unit

Nothing fancy needed, many available and after reading about them my head is spinning. Want something that has voice turn by turn. Suggestions welcomed.

I agree cell phone using Waze. If you want a stand alone unit, before the advent of fancy cell phones I did fine with the Garmin units.

The problem with cell phone is dropped service often drops routing. I have had great success with the Garmin plug and play units from best buy, before 2013. Have had Nav package on all vehicles post 2013.

We have navigation in our vehicles now but I have brought our garmin along on trips where we’re going to do a lot of driving and are renting a car. Probably had it 6-8years but it’s been very good and doesn’t use data....

Waze is great. Get a good "holder" for your phone, and you are set to go.

Google maps has been good to me. I have an old TomTom I'd give you. POS as far as I'm concerned. It's tried to lead me down gravel more than once towing the boat.

I've used google maps in a lot of major cities and it hasn't let me down. One place it did leave me down was in Maine. It was mid winter and it seemed to want to take me on every unplowed back road country path in order to save 2 minutes off taking the highway. I travel a lot for work and it is just easier to use my phone in the rental cars - I have a good phone holder that I try not to leave behind when I turn the vehicle in. I have not tried Waze yet, but will give it a look. I really like that google maps (and i assume Waze) will give you real time updates on traffic conditions such as accidents and detours. The problem with the GPS units that I had prior to using my phone was that they constantly needed updated and it was not a simple process.

Waze is a Google product which uses the same maps. The difference is Waze allows user input for hazards in the road, police, traffic notifications, red light cameras, speed traps, and will give you an audible alert when you are getting close to something reported.

All new Garmins have free lifetime updates.

Can’t beat a Garmin, they show what the upcoming intersection will look like and what lane you need to be in.
Plus nearby restaurants, gas stations, motels, etc.

I’ve never had that problem. Once it gets a gps position it won’t lose it even without cell signal. I use my phone in remote areas with no issues.

Cell phone nav is great, but having a dedicated unit can be really nice. One of the Garmin units with the glass capacitive touch screen is what you want...

I think the voice activated Nav in my F150 sucks. Maybe I need to learn it better, but lately I've just been plugging my phone in. When I click the voice activated nav it asks only for a place in the town you're traveling in, not necessarily where you're going. maybe there's a setting around this. Otherwise you have to punch in a full address.
