Yamaha Lower units is there a difference?

I have a 04 VX250TLRC 250 vmax outboard. Is there a difference between a 250hp Vmax and a HDPI lower unit??
The Hdpi lower unit is on a 2006 250hp Hdpi.

Is there a difference in the gear ratios?

The 2004 model is about $500 higher. Whole different unit it would appear. If you need to buy one, you might want to go to a good book store carrying a bunch of boating magazines. Some of them have advertising from all the big engine parts sources--many of which are in Florida. Lower units are frighteningly expensive as whole units. And it takes a trained mechanic to rebuild them.

I know someone who has a hdpi lower unit. There is nothing wrong with mine. Just wanting a spare just in case i was to damage mine beyond repair is all.

I have an HPDI lower unit on my OX66. On the 250, it has the same gear ratio. Only difference is the low water pickups.
