    Cleaning lower Cowling

Does anyone know of a cleaning solution that can remove the chalk colored residue off the casing of the lower unit of Mercury/other engine below the bottom cowling?

I used CLR when I bought my much neglected and left outdoors for a year project boat.

    Worked great.

Once cleaned and shiny, I use Boat Bling Hotsauce after each use and always looks like new.

Thanks DQM. Kind of scared of using the CLR (will it hurt the paint?) but I'll try some of that Bling Hotsauce.

If you mean calcium deposits. You can try a 70 to 30 percent viginar /water mix if CLR scares ya. Get a softish bug sponge and spray it on , let it sit, and then do a little scrubbing.

I didn't let the CLR sit for very long, really not at all. Sprayed on, scrubbed away with a soft brush, then wiped it clean with clean water.

Most any 3000 grit diminishing compound and wool buffing pad will cut it off. Depending on how perfect you want the finish after that you may have to follow up with 3M Perfect it 2 and 3 and matching pads on a DA. Lastly...wax.

I use a 50/50 mix of alcohol and water with a damp towel at the ramp when I take the boat out of the water. Keeps it looking new. Then I wipe down the

“The Works” toilet bowl cleaner. Very cheap and does the job.

Actually this works very well. I have used the toilet cleaners and it does a "okay" job. I little rubbing compound followed up with wax will make it look brand new.

Be careful with this stuff. It is very corrosive!

Well I tried the Bing Hot Sauce and it did the trick. The lower unit is free from chalky residue and looks new again. It was not a buildup of scale from sitting in the water since it is trailered to and from the lake. It was just a chalky film, I was thinking from the heat from the motor exhaust. The Hot Sauce smells like vinegar.

Vinegar would've done it, you just need something acidic to dissolve the minerals. Either way, glad you got it cleaned up!

Boat Bling hot sauce. Spray/mist on...let sit for a bit...wipe w/ microfiber. It dissolves all that stuff and leaves a nice finish
